As of 2021, South Korea recorded the lowest total fertility rate among 204 nations.

The education sector was the first to experience the impact, with a significant decrease in elementary school enrollment which led to a rise in vacant classrooms. In response to concerns that sparsely populated, large classrooms could create an unsettling environment for students, desks and chairs were designed to foster creative instruction and facilitate active small-group engagement.

Traditional desks are typically rectangular, designed to efficiently accommodate larger groups of students in a classroom and to assist instructors with management. However, when working with a smaller group of students, it may be beneficial to provide more individualized attention rather than a conforming to a standardized approach. Anticipating that certain types of classes and activities might benefit from a shift toward creativity and attentiveness, the Donut Table was designed with these possibilities in mind.

The Donut Table is an arc-shaped desk that forms a donut-like arrangement when five desks are aligned. This design encourages group activities and efficiently utilizes open space in the classroom. Additionally, the desks can be connected along one side to create a wave pattern, further supporting a variety of creative activities.

The desk legs are designed to form a cylindrical space that wraps around bags when desks are aligned, creating an aesthetically appealing design that naturally guides students to align the desks accurately. A long support joining the two desk legs curves upward to hold a drawer, and one of the two securing screws is shaped to serve as a bag hook, maximizing functionality while minimizing components.
